The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas advert created using AI following facing significant criticism on social media.

The brief film was developed via AI-generated video and was originally uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, audiences online criticized the use of AI in the film. A number of described it as "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment is an key lesson as we explore the appropriate application of generative technology," commented a statement from the company.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various things that often go badly during the holidays, under the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Adverts that include AI tools have become a rising phenomenon among major corporations, notably for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly released consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As segments produced using generative AI are prone to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be about a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also raised worries about the replacement of human roles in the production sector, with some commenters noting it could reduce opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Production Company

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

She stated, the development required "seven weeks" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then edited during the edit "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she said. "The result was a finished piece."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a significant "favorable response" from viewers.

However, several companies have likewise encountered criticism for using AI in advertising. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the continuing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between new tools and human craftsmanship.
