Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening cup on 14 different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
